Decisions About Licensing

The Cornell community decides...CU Software investigates

Several factors play into the decisions on which software is offered at specially discounted prices to the Cornell community.

  1. A need is identified by making a suggestion to CU Software. This could be an individual, or a department that is already managing a software license and would like it managed centrally.
  2. The need is vetted by CU Software to better understand what is sought. Basically, we ensure that we know exactly what software is needed, what business/academic objective it serves, and who would need the software.
  3. Once we pre-qualify the need, CU Software uses 4 criteria to ensure that we can add value in a sustainable manner:
    • Does the software have broad campus appeal?
    • Can license fees be significantly reduced?
    • Can CU Software identify a viable cost-recovery method?
    • Is the risk of decentralized deployment unreasonable?
  4. For software that is managed by CU Software, it is imperative that we are able to recover the license fees from the users at Cornell. Since we want to provide the most appropriate license options to meet the identified need, we do our best to present as many options as possible and settle on a license which meets the needs of the majority.

If we don't carry the software you're interested in, please let us know.
