What is the Microsoft Academic Select Agreement?
Microsoft Academic Select is a software acquisition agreement that provides Cornell faculty and staff access to most Microsoft software for Cornell-owned computers at a fraction of the off-the-shelf price.
Faculty and staff at all Cornell locations and formal affiliations -- Ithaca, Geneva, New York City, Washington, Arecibo, Qatar, and more -- can purchase software for Cornell/Affiliate-owned computers under the Select Agreement.
Contract Term: October 2, 2006 - October 31, 2009
Important Notes:
Microsoft Campus Agreement. Due to Cornell's recent enrollment in the Microsoft Desktop Bundle Campus Agreement, all Cornell Faculty & Staff and Cornell-owned computers are fully licensed for the Windows OS Upgrade; which means that buying Windows OS Upgrade licenses from Insight is not necessary.
Microsoft Select. Cornell has changed vendors to support our Microsoft Select Agreement. The new vendor is Insight, which is formerly known as Software Spectrum.
The new Insight website for Cornell is now live and ready for use. If at any time you need personal assistance with Insight site registration, product, or ordering information, please contact our Insight representative:

- Select "Browse products available under this program"
-
- The result will display a page with three (3) blue tabs: "Licenses", "Media", and "Bundles"
- The "Licenses" and "Media" tabs mean that the products listed under these tabs are only software licenses or software media
- The "Bundles" tab is different, meaning that it will list Microsoft Licenses and Software Assurance.
- *Software Assurance is a maintenance program, which you are encouraged to consider purchasing if your use of the software requires you to stay current during the term of Cornell's contract. It's a person choice.
- The Insight ordering system works like many other online ordering systems that you have probably used. Once you have found your product, you have a couple options, which are clearly visible on all product pages or listings:
-
- Add to Shopping Cart
- Add to Personal Favorites (nice for frequent purchases)
- Once items are added to your Shopping Cart, you can check the Cart at any time to manage the purchase. Within the Cart you have the following options:
-
- Add Items
- Update Cart
- Empty Cart
- Save As Quote
- Proceed to Checkout
- Checking Out
-
- There are two acceptable methods of payment for purchasing Microsoft products:
-
- Cornell Purchase Order
- Cornell Procurement Card (Personal credits will not be accepted)
- On the Shopping Cart Checkout page, most of the information should be pre-filled for you based on your account creation information. You may change the default Shipping Information and Billing Information if necessary.
- Once all of the payment information is entered, select the Place Order button at the bottom right of the page
-
- NOTE: Your order may reflect a NY State Tax charge during checkout. This is a feature that Insight cannot turn-off; however, they will remove the NY State Tax during order processing. If you find that NY State Tax is not removed from your final bill, please contact Danielle Beeman (see top of page) and she will facilitate removal.
- Order Confirmation
-
- An order confirmation email will be sent immediately after processing by Insight. Please watch for it, since it should provide the following information:
-
- Itemized order information
- Shipping information (if applicable...licenses do not ship, only media)
- Microsoft Product Key (if applicable...most Microsoft products require a product key; however, several do not)
If you have any questions or concerns about Insight or Microsoft licensing, please contact Chuck Jessop (cej4@cornell.edu).
